Assam Flood Situation Improves As Rainfall Ceases, Affected Population Shrinks To 1.55 Lakh

The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Monday as the incessant rainfall halted, resulting in a reduction in the number of affected people to 1.55 lakh, as reported by officials. However, two individuals tragically lost their lives due to drowning during the day. The latest figures mark a decrease from the 2.07 lakh people affected on Sunday and the alarming 4.07 lakh on Saturday.

According to the daily flood report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the two reported deaths occurred in Barpeta district, bringing the total toll from such incidents this year to five. The report revealed that a total of 1,55,896 individuals, including 73,915 men, 70,0346 women, and 11,935 children, were currently grappling with the devastating impact of the floods across 11 districts, as PTI reported.

The affected districts include Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Tamulpur. Fortunately, the water level of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries was receding, with no locations experiencing water levels above the danger mark.

Among the affected districts, Barpeta suffered the most with 87,232 individuals affected, followed by Bajali (44,617), Lakhimpur (17,086), and Nalbari (5,909). Currently, 99 relief camps are operational, providing shelter to 2,915 individuals affected by the floods.

Furthermore, the floods have caused extensive damage, with 563 villages submerged and 3801.63 hectares of crop areas destroyed. In terms of infrastructure, two embankments were breached in Darrang district, while three were damaged in Nalbari district. Additionally, the floodwaters have wreaked havoc on eight roads in Barpeta, Chirang, Darrang, Karimganj, and Nalbari districts.
