Canadian poet and University of Toronto alumna Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for an inventive body of work shaped by an ongoing engagement with classical literature.

Carson was named the 2026 Nobel laureate in literature on Thursday, becoming the latest writer to receive the Swedish Academy’s highest literary honour. The Nobel committee praised her “bold and inventive oeuvre” which, “in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature”, the University of Toronto said.

Nobel Recognition

The award recognises Carson’s literary work and its engagement with classical traditions, placing a writer known for moving between poetry, translation, criticism and experimental forms at the centre of this year’s Nobel announcement.

The Swedish Academy had scheduled the 2026 literature announcement for Thursday at its headquarters in Stockholm. The academy said the announcement would be made at 1pm local time.

The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded annually to the writer whose work is judged to have made the most significant contribution within the field. Carson’s citation specifically highlights the way she uses dialogue with the classical tradition to create new literary forms.

Who Is Carson?

Born in Canada, Carson has taught ancient Greek and has built her career around an extensive engagement with the literature and culture of classical Greece. The University of Chicago Press describes her simply as an author born in Canada who “teaches ancient Greek for a living”.

She is also an alumna of the University of Toronto. The university said the Nobel recognition makes Carson the fifth member of its faculty community to receive the prize. It described the award as a significant moment for the university and its global alumni community.

Her connection with the university extends beyond her studies. Carson’s work has also been taught and studied within the institution’s literature programmes, reflecting the influence of her writing and scholarship across contemporary literary studies.

Classical Influence

Carson’s relationship with ancient literature is central to how her work has been understood. The University of Chicago Press lists her work on Euripides’ Iphigenia among the Taurians, reflecting her long engagement with classical Greek texts.

The Nobel committee’s citation also places that relationship at the heart of its decision, highlighting not simply Carson’s use of classical material but the way she brings it into conversation with contemporary literary forms.

The recognition adds Carson’s name to the long list of writers who have received the literature Nobel for work that the Swedish Academy considers to have expanded the possibilities of literature.

The 2026 award will be formally presented at the Nobel ceremony in Stockholm in December.
