What makes Pyne tick? Is it his unwavering perfectionism? His transcendental vision? There’s an element of mystery in the processes of artistic creation, as ArthurKoestler once said. Pyne agrees: "Yes, it is difficult to convey the way we work interms of our everyday language." Whatever the nature of that secret fountainhead, asolo exhibition by Ganesh Pyne remains nothing short of a cultural event. For Pyne hasalways set his own pace, refusing with disdain to pander to the bazaar’s greed, neither painting like a man possessed nor ever a part of the hoopla circuit.
Admirers will, therefore, have to wait perhaps a whole year for his next show. "ACalcutta gallery has approached me for an exhibition of my recent works. I’ve neverbeen prolific, so the retrospective will not be organised before 1997-98," he says. The wait, as any art aficionado will vouch, will be worth it.
