In Group A clash between Senegal and Netherlands, it was Louis van Gaal’s side who emerged victors. The game seemed to be heading to a stalemate as both teams lacked the rhythm and looked far off from their best. The first half produced some half goalscoring chances but there weren’t any clear cut chances for any teams to pounce on. The second half was following a similar trajectory until the 84th minute. Frenkie de Jong whipped an inviting ball in the box which Cody Gakpo heads in the top corner to break the deadlock and give the Dutch side a one goal advantage. The game moved into stoppage time as eight minutes were added, giving plenty of time to Senegal to find an equalizer. However, it was Netherlands again who found the back of the net, this time through Davy Klassen in the 9th minute of stoppage time. Memphis Depay is in a one-on-one battle with Kalidou Koulibaly and takes a shot which is saved by Edouard Mendy. The ball falls into the path of Klassen who shoots the ball into an empty net to kill off the game and give Netherlands all three points.
