Terror Activities Surge In Jammu Region After Article 370 Abrogation, Official Data Reveals

In the wake of the historic Article 370 abrogation in August 2019, the picturesque region of Jammu has been grappling with an unexpected surge in terror activities, as per recently unveiled official statistics.

The data, which paints a concerning picture, showcases a 71 percent increase in the apprehension of terrorists and their overground workers (OGWs) between August 5, 2019, and June 16, 2023. This marked contrast from the preceding period between October 27, 2015, and August 4, 2019, underscores the evolving security landscape, as reported by PTI.

The monumental decision to abrogate Article 370 – a move that restructured the political fabric of Jammu and Kashmir – was implemented on August 5, 2019. This transformative action led to the formation of the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Ladakh.

Startlingly, the figures reveal a staggering shift in security dynamics. The aftermath of the Article 370 abrogation witnessed eight grenade and 13 improvised explosive device (IED) attacks in the Jammu region, compared to four grenade and seven IED attacks recorded between October 27, 2015, and August 4, 2019.

With somber implications, the statistics further illuminate the toll of terror. Fatalities resulting from IED explosions escalated by an alarming 73 percent from 2015-2019 to 2019-2023, exemplifying the intensification of these lethal incidents.

Comparing the pre- and post-abrogation periods, a 43 percent spike in terrorist-initiated stand-off fire and hit-and-run incidents was noted, along with a 39 percent increase in terror recruitment. These numbers provide a stark portrayal of the evolving security challenges faced by the region.

Yet, amidst the tumultuous surge in terror activities, a paradox emerges. The data highlights a significant reduction in civilian and security force casualties as a consequence of terror attacks. A 63 percent drop in civilian fatalities after the abrogation of Article 370 presents a glimmer of relief, while security forces experienced a 13 percent decrease in casualties.

As the wheels of time churn, the fabric of the region's everyday life has undergone a discernible transformation. Weapon snatchings, stone-pelting incidents, and calls for hartals and bandhs have all seen precipitous declines of 80 percent, 62 percent, and 42 percent respectively. This presents a nuanced narrative, revealing a multifaceted shift in the nature of local disruptions.

Security authorities spotlight the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch as the epicenter of these incidents, where over 65 terrorists met their fate in various encounters since August 5, 2019.

In a candid interaction with the press, Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, underscored the extensive revamping of the "360-degree security mechanism" in the Jammu division. He emphasized the collective efforts of the security grid in dismantling the support system of terrorists.

Sinha's assertion reflects optimism amidst adversity: "The overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has already improved… The J-K Police and other security agencies have started focusing on this region (Jammu) and achieved success against terrorists."

With a resolute stance, he added, "We are following the policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and our administration is determined and committed to take stringent action against those associated with the terror ecosystem or facilitating terrorist, secessionist activities."
