FOR a person with a take-home salary of Re 1 a month, Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha has increased her money manifold. According to statements filed with the IT Department, her wealth rose from Rs 1,88,75,400 in 1990-91 to Rs 5,81,94,815 in 1992-93. While her income in 1990-91 was Rs 86,860, it rose to Rs 4,48,660 in 1992 and Rs 6,64,530 in 1993. Her income from a vineyard in Hyderabad grew from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 9.5 lakh over the same three-year period. Soon after assuming office, she acquired a vacant plot adjoining her Poes Garden residence for Rs 8 lakh. The guideline price for the property was Rs 45 lakh.
