Heatwave: Rajasthan Sizzles At 50 Deg C; Sec 144 In Maharashtra Town; North India Likely To Get Relief In 3 Days

As Cyclone Remal crossed through West Bengal and brought heavy rain for several areas of the state, heatwave conditions continued to make people uncomfortable in parts of the country, with Rajasthan seeming to be the worst-hit as temperatures reached 50 degrees Celsius there.

However, in some good news, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said Northwestern and central parts of the country are likely to get some relief from scorching heat after three days due to a fresh western disturbance.       

In Maharashtra's Akola, Section 144 until May 31, prohibiting public gatherings, as a precautionary measure for heatwave.

A 'red' warning has been issued for Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, indicating a "very high likelihood" of heat illness and heat stroke for all age groups.

The state has also reported multiple heat-related deaths in the last three days, according to a news agency PTI report.

  • 45 Deg And Above In Several States: Official data showed that at least 37 places in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh recorded maximum temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius or above on Sunday, compared to 17 places a day ago.

  • Delhi's Najafgarh Records 48.3 Deg C: At least eight places in Delhi recorded maximum temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius, with Mungeshpur and Najafgarh logging a sweltering 48.3 degrees Celsius and 48.1 degrees Celsius, respectively. Haryana's Narnaul simmered at 47 degrees Celsius and Punjab's Faridkot at 47.4 degrees Celsius.

  • Shimla Records Hottest Day Of Season: Even the hills of Himachal Pradesh, a major tourist hub for people looking to escape the punishing heat in the plains, also reeled under sizzling temperatures. Shimla experienced the hottest day of the season at 30.6 degrees Celsius while Una sizzled at 44.4 degrees Celsius.

  • Sec 144 In Maharashtra Town Over Heatwave: The scorching heat prompted the administration in Maharashtra's Akola to impose Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) until May 31, prohibiting public gatherings. Establishments have been instructed to ensure adequate arrangements for drinking water and fans for workers. Private coaching classes should not be held during the afternoon, the administration directed.

  • Expect Relief From Heatwave After 3 Days, Says IMD: Northwestern and central parts of the country are likely to get some relief from scorching heat after three days due to a fresh western disturbance, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday. "Expect relief from the heat wave in northwest and central parts of the country after three days due to a western disturbance and moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea. There could be some thunderstorm activity in northwest India and rain in the western Himalayan region," IMD said.

  • Cyclone Remal Brings Rain In Bengal: Cyclone Remal crossed through the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal with devastating winds reaching speeds of 135 kilometres per hour, resulting in damage to infrastructure and property in parts of Bengal. Flight operations that were suspended for 21 hours on Sunday as a precautionary measure in Kolkata resumed on Monday morning. The cyclone ravaged adjacent coasts of the state and Bangladesh between Sagar Island and Khepupara, near the southwest of Mongla in the neighbouring country, after its landfall process began at 8.30 pm on Sunday.
