Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane, who launched the 'Malhar Certification' platform aimed at certifying 'jhatka' mutton shops exclusively operated by members of the Hindu community, stated that halal food is a practice of Islam, not Hinduism.
"The workers who follow Hindutva ideology have come together to offer a good alternative for the Hindu community's rights regarding mutton consumption. For years, there has been a pressure that only halal mutton should be consumed—either you eat halal or you have no other option. We've now provided a viable alternative. Halal consumption is part of the Islamic faith, not Hinduism. So, if someone offers such an alternative, I support them," Rane said to media persons.
On Tuesday, opposition leaders criticized Rane's comments regarding the 'Malhar Certification' for Hindu meat traders.
Congress MLA Nana Patole condemned Rane's remarks, stating, "A minister should not speak in this manner. It sends a message that the Chief Minister has no control over his ministers. If any minister is inciting conflict between religions, the CM should take action."
However, BJP MLA Sanjay Upadhyay supported Rane's statement, arguing that chemicals produced during the halal process are harmful to the body.
"I have no issue with what anyone eats, but if someone is being fed in a harmful way, it should be addressed. The chemicals produced during the halal process are detrimental to health. I stand with Nitesh Rane on this matter. Chicken and mutton shops should be licensed," Upadhyay said to ANI.
