Amir Bhai used to be a frequent visitor to an office in the upmarket Ghera Towers in Dubai. This is the office complex from which Dawood’s men still function. Though he was seen in the company of Dubai-based members of the Bombay underworld, he is said to have the image of a fixer with powerful connections in Delhi.

As much as Rs 48 crore of the Jain hawala money was routed from abroad through Amir Bhai. According to S.K. Jain’s statement to the CBI, it was Amir Bhai who acted as the middleman between Italian firm Snamprogetti and the Jains. He was also the conduit through which Swedish firm Scanska paid $18 million to the Jains. This amount was the 3-per cent commission for securing the Uri hydel project in Jammu and Kashmir.

Efforts by the CBI to track down Amir Bhai have been in vain. A suspect who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate under the impression that he was Amir Bhai proved to be Ameer Farrok, a hawala operator from Madras. According to sources in Dubai, Amir Bhai is outside India, perhaps in Seychelles.
