With HBO’s “The Idol” being canceled, the focus has shifted to shows that initially began with a thought in mind but ended up being canceled mid-way.
Announcing the cancellation of the show, HBO dropped the hammer saying, "The Idol” was HBO's one of the most provocative original programs, and we're pleased by the strong audience response," adding, "After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We're grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work." The show’s cancellation also raised sparks among social media users.
Well, this is not the first time such shows do not see light at the end of the tunnel. While there were many shows in the past that shut mid-way, there were also some that never even aired.
Here is a look at some such shows:
ABC’s Alaska Daily
The series revolves around a fiercely talented and award-winning investigative journalist Eileen Fitzgerald (Swank) who leaves her high-profile New York life behind after a fall from grace. She joins a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage and begins traversing on a journey to find both personal and professional redemption. Despite an interesting plot line, the show was canceled as it failed to garner a sizable following.
CBS’s True Lies
To the surprise of its fans, the show “True Lies” was canceled just before the final episode was aired leaving the fans hanging about where the showrunners intended to take it. CBS stated a lesser following, making it difficult to maintain the show to be a reason for cancellation. However, why it had to be just before the finale episode is a question still unanswered.
HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show
Despite being an Emmy-winning comedy series, the show was canceled after the fourth season. The creators and showrunners had announced that it was a collective decision to end on a creative high note. A Black Lady Sketch Show received 13 Emmy nominations and three wins, including for the first Black woman, Bridget Stokes, to win directing for a variety series.
Although this list is just the tip of the iceberg, several showrunners and creators have in several instances in the past decided to cancel shows abruptly leaving fans disheartened.
