Ministry of Home Affairs has posted Avtar Singh Shahi as the new Inspector General (IG) of the Border Security Force (BSF) Frontier Headquarters in Delhi. A senior officer with over three decades of service, Shahi earlier served as IG of the Frontier Headquarters Special Ops BSF in Odisha.
Recognised for distinguished service
Avtar Singh Shahi has been recognised with some of the highest honours in policing. In August 2025, he received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, India’s top recognition for long and exceptional service. Earlier, in May 2018, he was honoured with the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service, awarded by then Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
From Assistant Commandant to Inspector General
Avtar Singh Shahi joined the BSF in 1989 as an Assistant Commandant. Over the years, he has worked across India, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, serving in varied operational environments. His consistent rise through the ranks highlights his long service, leadership, and dedication to the force.
Strategic posting in Delhi
The Delhi Frontier Headquarters plays a key role in the BSF’s operational and policy framework. The post of IG here carries significant responsibility as it involves oversight of administrative decisions, operational coordination, and future planning for the force.


Experience in border operations
During his assignments in sensitive border regions, Shahi has effectively led anti-infiltration and counter-terrorism operations. He is known for maintaining discipline and morale within the ranks and is regarded as an officer with a strong operational understanding and clear decision-making skills.
