At least 91% of the people who participated in a "referendum" organised by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) across Delhi have favoured the Arvind Kejriwal-led government's proposal to make metro and bus rides free for women, the party said on Tuesday.

AAP Delhi convener Gopal Rai said the party conducted 1,120 public meetings across the national capital to gauge what people thought of their proposed initiative.

“Senior leaders, MLAs, councillors and members of the party’s women wing organised these meetings, in which they interacted with as many as 71,592 people,” Rai was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

“Their opinion was sought on the issue of free rides for women and as many as 64,972 persons voted in favour of it. In terms of percentage share, around 90.8% of people expressed their approval on the proposed scheme.”

Rai added that a report on the findings of the survey was prepared and submitted to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's office.
