The international cycling community is in a state of profound shock and mourning following the tragic death of 19-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling, who passed away after a severe accident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal.
Tarling, a talented Welsh rider who represented Great Britain on both the road and track, was competing for the NSN Development Team when the incident occurred along the 166.8km route from Melgaco to Fafe.
He was also widely recognized as the younger brother of Netcompany-Ineos World Tour rider Josh Tarling, following closely in his footsteps as a promising time-trial specialist after finishing third in the under-23 men's individual time trial at the British Championships in June and competing in the Tour of Britain just under a year ago.

Providing details on the fatal event, Major Tiago Machado of the National Republican Guard stated to local media that there had been a collision between the cyclist and a light goods vehicle, and confirmed that an official investigation is currently under way.
In response to the tragedy, race organizers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation announced that racing was immediately halted and the scheduled podium ceremony was canceled as a mark of respect and mourning.
The Volta a Portugal, which commenced in Lisbon on August 5 and was structured across 10 stages to conclude in Porto on August 16, has been heavily overshadowed by the heartbreaking event.
