Charles Leclerc described his pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix as "the most unexpected" of his career after stunning both McLarens on Saturday.
Leclerc pipped drivers' championship leader Oscar Piastri by 0.026 seconds, with the Australian's McLaren team-mate Lando Norris a further 0.041 seconds off the pace.
It marked the first time that Leclerc had taken pole position for a grand prix in 2025, with the Monegasque driver starting at the front of the grid for the first time since Azerbaijan last year.
McLaren had been expected to dominate qualifying, having topped the timesheets across all three practice sessions.
But both Piastri and Norris were unable to build on that dominance in the final qualifying session, leaving the door open for Leclerc, who could not quite believe what he had done.
"Today, I don't understand anything at Formula 1," Leclerc said. "Honestly, the whole qualifying has been extremely difficult. When I say extremely difficult, I'm not exaggerating.
"It was difficult for us to get to Q2, it was difficult for us to get to Q3. Everything became a lot trickier, and I knew I just had to do a clean lap to target third.
"At the end of the day, it’s pole position. I definitely did not expect that.
"I could definitely feel it (the grip change) a lot, and I was also on the lower side of the downforce, so when the rain started in Q2, I was just hoping that it wouldn't stay there.
"It didn't. The conditions changed which made everything very tricky, and at the end, we are on pole position.
"Honestly, I have no words. It's probably one of the best pole positions I've ever had. It's the most unexpected, for sure."
When asked if he could win Sunday's race, Leclerc said: "The start and Turn 1 will be key.
"I have no idea how it will go, but one thing for sure is that I’ll do absolutely everything in order to keep that first place," Leclerc said.
"If we manage to do that, that should make our life easier for the rest of the race."
It was not all smiles at Ferrari, though, with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton knocked out in the second session and will start the race in 12th.
The Mercedes of George Russell will line up alongside Norris on the second row in fourth, with the Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll starting fifth and sixth.
Gabriel Bortoleto will line up in seventh ahead of reigning world champion Max Verstappen, who could only rescue eighth on a dismal weekend for Red Bull.
The Racing Bulls pairing of Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar rounded out the top 10.
