Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season has been suspended for a week, B Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Friday. The development comes following a meeting of the top brass of the board.
"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week," the official release from the board stated. "Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders."
"It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war," a BCCI official had told PTI, confirming the suspension of the tournament, which still has 12 league games and four Play-off games remaining.
The suspension comes after Punjab Kings' match against Delhi Capitals was abandoned midway in Dharamsala with floodlight failure being cited as official reason. The stadium was evacuated and a special train arranged for players and support staff to travel to Delhi as Dharamsala and Chandigarh airports were both shut down due to security reasons.
"While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the Nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security of our country. The BCCI remains firmly committed to support all efforts that safeguard India and will always align its decisions in the best interest of the nation," the board said in its release.
Tensions have been simmering between India and Pakistan after Indian forces destroyed terror infrastructure at nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir in retaliation of the terror attack in Pahalgam.
Pakistan Super League too has been affected by these tensions and after cancellation of Thursday's match, the tournament has been shifted to the United Arab Emirates with the revised schedule still to be announced.
