Karim Benzema has announced international retirement after failing to make his entry back into the France team for the recently concluded World Cup. (More Football News)

The 2022 Ballon d'Or winner mentioned this via a tweet, which read, "I made the efforts and the mistakes it took to get to where I am today and I'm proud of that! I have written my own story and our story is ending."

Reports were rife that the French forward was displeased with national coach Didier Deschamps' decision to not include him in the World Cup squad despite being fit again.

Apparently, Benzema had also rejected French president Emmanuel Macron's invitation to attend the 2022 World Cup final.

On Friday, he had posted an Instagram photo with the caption reading "I am not interested."

In a career spanning 15 years, the Les Blues striker made 97 appearances scoring 37 goals. He had not featured in the 2018 FIFA World Cup after being excluded from the team.
