- Karnataka launches a novel rural electricity billing system in 2003
- Locals appointed as gram vidyuth pratinidhis (GVPs) in each village read meters, prepare bills and recover dues
- 3,425 GVPs work in 5,605 panchayats, that is four-fifths of rural Karnataka
- Power distcoms say collection, on an average, has gone up by 50%
- GVPs earn roughly Rs 4,500 a month
- Villagers are happy with the system since they get bills on time and their complaints are reddressed promptly
- AP, Gujarat keen to try the model
