A student of a college run by former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand’s trust was found with severe burns and naked along a highway in Shahjahanpur, UP. She is stable and under treatment, doctors say. This follows the death of two girls—15 and 14—in Unnao. They and a 16-year-old were found in a field where they had gone to fetch fodder. The older girl is being treated in a Kanpur hospital.

The Bombay High Court has granted bail to P. Varavara Rao, the 82-year-old ailing poet-activist accused in the Bhima-Koregaon case, on medical grounds for six months. Rao was arrested on August 28, 2018, in the case involving an alleged conspiracy to assassinate PM Modi, a charge he and his family have denied.

The government allayed fears of Covid mutant strains behind a surge in cases in several states. The N440K and E484Q variants have been detected in Maharashtra, Kerala and Telangana, but there is no reason to believe that they are res­ponsible for the upsurge of the outbreak in Maharashtra and Kerala.
