"Sonia Has Played A Very Big Role"

How far have you succeeded in your unity efforts, given the Tamil Maanila Congress reluctance to come back to the fold?

Our unity efforts have paid off. Whoever wants to return to the party is being welcomed with open arms. Even as we speak, some people are rejoining the party. As for the TMC, it is a different party now, so its leaders are find-ing it difficult. But at the proper time, everyone will rejoin the Congress.

Many Congressmen feel Sonia Gandhi should join the party.

Sonia is a noble lady. Whatever her wishes are, I will respect them. Many people have requested her to come forward, but I don’t know her mind.

What role did she play in the unity efforts?

A very big role. She has encouraged party unity from the very beginning.

Why do Congressmen rush to 10, Janpath to consult Sonia?

If they do that, I am not aware of it. But the Congress is emotionally dependent on the Nehru-Gandhi-Maulana Azad legacy. All because the entire Nehru-Gandhi family has come to symbolise secularism.

There are allegations that you have been targeting Rao on behalf of Sonia, who does not like him.

It is not true. It’s also not true that Sonia and Rao do not get along.

But you have been charged with marginalising Rao’s people, like Bitta and company.

Well, Bitta is 44-45 years old. According to the party constitution, the Youth Congress president must be younger, so we had to effect a change.

How will you revitalise the Congress to face elections?

Congress unity is imperative. If people come back to the party, I am sure the Congress will become a strong force and we will win the next election.

A former aide has accused you of having undisclosed wealth.

What can I say? Leave that matter alone.
