They convinced the corporation to let them sterilise and vaccinate (against rabies) the dogs and release them back in their old localities, instead of putting them down. The corporation had arrived at an understanding with the group and had agreed to pay Blue Cross Rs 19 lakh a year for the drive.

However, a standing committee of the corporation says the drive has failed. It says Blue Cross only sterilises a measly seven out of 8,000 dogs a year, leaving the rest to breed rapidly. Blue Cross contents this saying no canine census has been done to back such claims.

But nobody, it appears is safe in the city anymore. Even the first citizen, Governor C. Rangarajan, was reportedly attacked on his own lawns by strays when he set out for a morning walk, some two months ago!
