The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday directed developers and contractors to suspend hazardous construction activities and ensure strict safety measures at all project sites, following a 'red' alert for extremely heavy rains and strong winds.
Compliance with the advisory is mandatory, the BMC said, stressing that the safety of workers, neighbouring residents and the general public is of paramount importance.
In an advisory issued to developers, architects, licensed surveyors, contractors, project managers and site engineers, the civic body asked them to inspect scaffolding, tower cranes, material hoists, safety nets, formwork, tin sheets and other temporary structures to ensure they are stable and securely fastened.
The BMC directed that loose materials on upper floors, terraces and elevated platforms be removed or firmly secured to prevent accidents during strong winds.
Lifting operations and work at heights should be suspended wherever weather conditions pose a risk, while exclusion zones must be maintained below active work areas, it said.
The civic body also instructed builders to conduct immediate site-wide safety inspections, ensure workers use prescribed personal protective equipment and fall protection, and continuously monitor weather conditions until normalcy returns.
