The massive financial commitment arrives ahead of upcoming local body elections, which have heightened the political stakes for the ruling party.
The administrative decision follows a week of intense backlash over state restrictions on visiting and recording inside government schools. Public anger escalated following an alleged attack on Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) workers, alongside intense pressure from the Congress in the Assembly.
CJP’s nationwide 'School Thik Karo' campaign and relentless demands from the Congress for school inspections have placed the state government under severe pressure.
Political Counter
Political observers view the major funding announcement as a strategic move to shift focus away from rising calls for basic public facilities.
An anonymous senior BJP leader said, in remarks reported by Economic Times, "CJP’s call to citizens to visit govt schools and document their condition, followed by Congress making school infrastructure a political issue, has given the campaign momentum. Allowing the issue to remain unanswered would have allowed the opposition to define the narrative ahead of local body elections."
Breakdown Of Infrastructure Blueprint
Under the ₹12,500-crore plan, the state government will spend ₹2,487.7 crore on constructing 3,587 new school buildings and ₹8,378.3 crore on 83,783 new classrooms. Another ₹1,129.5 crore has been allocated for major repairs in 22,589 schools, while ₹340.4 crore will be spent on building 13,616 toilet complexes.
Digital Strategy & Funding
The government has allocated ₹1,087 crore for a digital education strategy to be executed by December 2026. This budget covers 9,000 smart classrooms, 7,000 ICT labs and 80,000 tablets.
State authorities informed that more than ₹3,006 crore worth of educational development works have received approval or are in progress.
During the 2024-25 and 2025-26 financial periods, authorities greenlit 3,364 significant building and renovation projects. Amounting to ₹1,219.9 crore, these efforts encompass 614 fresh school structures and extensive renovations in 2,750 existing ones.
