The stylist for Olivia Rodrigo used two iconic 1990s films as primary sources of inspiration to create a contemporary, coming-of-age vibe for the artist's most recent music video.

Richard Linklater's classic romance drama Before Sunrise (1995),was the first movie to influence Rodrigo, and was the source of his inspiration. The 1995 film follows two strangers as they happen to cross paths on a train and decide to spend a romantic night together in Vienna. The study of rash decisions, transient relationships, and the ambiguity of adolescent love in the movie strongly echoes the themes in Bad Idea, Right? In her words, Rodrigo draws inspiration from the film's spontaneity and the transient nature of human connections, expressing a bittersweet yearning that is impossible for listeners to escape.

The movie is a lighthearted comedy that explores the relationships between rich kids in Beverly Hills. Bad Idea, Right? perfectly portrays the energy of impetuous youth and the careless chase of desire, echoing the bold yet endearing spirit of the characters in Clueless.  Rodrigo’s song gains a layer of humor because of Rodrigo's deft blending of the film's witty and carefree attitude, which makes it even more contagious.

Bad Idea, Right? is proof of Olivia Rodrigo's skill at fusing the past and present as she continues to make her imprint on the music business. Rodrigo demonstrates that great art is a timeless discussion between periods, and her music is the bridge that unites them by paying homage to the everlasting themes of transient connections and youthful impulsiveness featured in the iconic 1990s films Before Sunrise and Clueless.
