U.S. President Donald Trump is en route to Texas today following catastrophic flash floods that have claimed the lives of at least 120 people, with 161 still missing after torrential rains inundated central parts of the state over the weekend, BBC reported.
Accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, the president is expected to visit Kerrville, one of the hardest-hit areas, where he will meet with emergency responders, local officials, and families affected by the disaster. The visit aims to assess the damage firsthand and offer federal support to communities struggling to cope with the aftermath.
Speaking to reporters before departing Washington, Trump called the scale of the flooding "unthinkable."
“Nobody can even believe it — that much water, that fast,” he said. “We are with the people of Texas, and we’ll make sure they have everything they need to recover.”
Storms Deliver Months’ Worth of Rain in Hours
Last weekend, a series of violent storms swept through central Texas, unleashing several months’ worth of rain in just a few hours. The rapid deluge caused rivers to breach their banks, overwhelming homes, highways, and entire neighborhoods. In some towns, cars were seen floating down streets-turned-rivers as emergency crews scrambled to rescue residents trapped by rising waters.
Local officials say the search and rescue efforts are ongoing, with the number of missing feared to rise as more remote areas become accessible. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) teams have already been deployed, and the National Guard is assisting with recovery and relief.
