For the first time in its history, the United Kingdom’s Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) has appointed a woman as its chief.
According to Reuters, the selection follows a formal recruitment process launched in March, during which government departments were asked to recommend suitable candidates.
The vacancy was open to individuals from across the intelligence services, civil and diplomatic services, the armed forces, and the police. Ultimately, the position was awarded to a senior officer within MI6 who has spent 25 years in the field of intelligence.
The new chief, known publicly only as "Blaise" for security purposes, studied anthropology at the University of Cambridge and was part of the women’s rowing team. She is also recognised for her expertise in advanced technology and its application in intelligence gathering.
According to the Hindu, foreign Secretary David Lammy, who is responsible for overseeing MI6, described the appointment as timely.
“In a world facing growing instability and emerging threats—where technological advantage is crucial and hostile actors are increasingly coordinated—Blaise will lead efforts to protect the UK’s security both domestically and internationally,” he said.
