On April 6 at Manaparai town in Tiuruchy district of Central Tamil Nadu, a pregnant lady is brought to the district hospital by her husband, a daily wager. The woman, Sulochana, 25, was due for admission on the day for her delivery.

After examining her, the doctors said she needed to undergo a C-section for which at least one unit of her O positive blood was needed. Due to the lockdown, the hospital could not get its regular donors to come and donate the blood. When they asked the husband, Elumalai, to look for a donor, he decided to take his wife back to their native village 10 km away.

As the couple, along with a woman relative, walked towards the Manaparai bus station hoping to find a taxi to go back home, Syed Abuthahir, a constable on duty, asked why they were outside in violation of the lockdown.

When the husband explained their predicament, Abuthahir (23) asked Sulochana’s blood group. “When the husband replied O positive, I told them it was also my blood group and offered to donate my blood. So I took them back to the hospital, got her admitted and donated my blood,” Abuthathir disclosed later. Sulochana delivered a healthy baby girl the same night.

Learning about the incident, Tiruchy Rural SP Ziaul Haque rewarded Abuthahir with Rs.1,000 and also informed the state DGP J.K. Tripathy about his humane act. The DGP on his part sanctioned a reward of another Rs.10,000 to the constable.

That is not the end of the story as Abuthahir promptly handed over his entire reward money to Sulochana for her hospital and other expenses. Elumalai said he has invited the constable to his home once the lockdown is over.
