Anti-CAA Protests Live Updates: 48 Arrested In UP's Muzaffarnagar; Meerut Death Toll Rises To 5

A week after police-led violence on Jamia Millia Islamia students triggered nationwide outrage, the people have been on the streets protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). At least 16 people have died over the last two days in Uttar Pradesh in incidents during the anti-CAA protests. On Sunday, the protests continued against the controversial law even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Delhi's Ramlila Maidan.

8;00 PM: As many as 48 people have been arrested and 67 shops sealed in connection with violent protests in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar last week during which several persons, including over a dozen policemen, were injured and vehicles gutted.

7:10 PM: Curfew imposed in some parts of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh after violence during Friday protests was relaxed on Sunday for seven hours from 1 pm, police said.

6:40 PM: The Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC) have postponed due to internet shutdown certain examinations that were scheduled to be held on December 24 and 26.

These examinations for recruitment of junior assistants and computer operators will now be held on January 4 and January 10 respectively.

6:11 PM: Bar Council of India held a meeting and passed a resolution saying, "The council has appealed to the people of the country to maintain peace and harmony."

It added, "The attack on police official/personnel or the defence personnel are very serious issues. Bar expresses its solidarity with our Police and Armed forces."

5:40 PM: Students, doctors and artists were among the scores of people who gathered at Central Park in Delhi's Connaught Place to protest against the CAA and NRC.

Several AIIMS doctors wearing stethoscopes around their neck were present at the site where the protesters sang patriotic songs and recited poems.

5:20 PM: Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot led a massive peaceful march called the 'Samvidhan Bacho rally' against the CAA and demanded that the centre repeal the act.

4:50 PM: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made an unscheduled visit to Bijnor in UP and met families of two persons, killed in recent violence over the amended citizenship law.

4:40 PM: Congress leader Anand Sharma reacts to PM Modi's statements on CAA-NRC protests, saying. "It's the Home Minister's statement in both the Houses, it's in public domain. That has to be then duly clarified. That has created an environment of fear, insecurity and uncertainty in the country. It's primarily the government which is responsible for that."

4:00 PM: The death toll in the violence that occurred during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut two days ago rose to five, a senior police official said on Sunday. Four were reported to have died earlier.

3:32 PM: Student protestors in Puducherry were seen shaving their heads and raising slogan denouncing the CAA.

3:21 PM: PM Modi appeals to people to shun violence as he concludes speech.

3:15 PM: "Congress and its allies upset due to the support I received from Muslim countries," PM Modi said.

3:10 PM: The prime minister said, "I am very confident that those who are standing with the tricolour in their hands will also raise voice against Pakistan sponsored terrorism. They will inspire people to do that."

3:00 PM: "Dalits, who came here from Pakistan, among beneficiaries of citizenship law; why you can't see their pain?" PM Modi says referring to critics of the CAA.

2:50 PM: "Educated Naxalis--urban naxals--are spreading the rumour that all Muslims will be sent to detention centres," Modi said, adding, "I request the youth of the country to read the Act in detail and not to fall prey to the rumours of detention centres being spread."

2:30 PM: Modi accuses rivals of creating fear and chaos, and trying to defame India abroad.

2:10 PM: People were incited, those in high positions shared fake videos says Modi on protests against citizenship law. 

2:06 PM: Speaking at the rally In Ramlila Maidan, PM Modi said the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed after the approval of all parliamentarians. "But there are certain political groups who have resorted to rumourmongering on a large scale," he said. 

1:30 PM: Curfew clamped in Mangaluru in the aftermath of the violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act on December 19 was lifted on Sunday for 12 hours, as no untoward incident was reported from the city.

Two people were killed in police firing on Thursday as protests against the CAA turned violent.

12:55 PM: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says CAA is not against any Indian Muslim. "It is only to grant citizenship to persecuted religious minorities of three neighbouring nations.

"I appeal to our Muslim brothers, see through this misinformation campaign of Congress, they only see you as a vote bank," he said.

10:44 AM: The situation in West Bengal was peaceful on Sunday morning, with no incidents of violence reported from any part of the state, police said. According to sources, police administration has increased vigil and beefed-up arrangements in trouble-torn areas to maintain law and order.

10:14 AM: Janata Dal-United has called upon its ally BJP to convene a meeting of ruling National Democratic Alliance over the proposal to have a countrywide National Register of Citizens. 

9:52 AM: The internet services in Aligarh, snapped since December 15, in the wake of violent protests over the Amended Citizenship Act, were restored on Sunday. Internet services were suspended on December 15 after major protests erupted in the region over the newly-enacted citizenship law.
