The laws of cricket apply in Twenty20 as well. Some playing conditions are changed to fit the format
- As the name suggests, each innings limited to a maximum of 20 overs
- Teams have to bowl the 20 overs in an hour and 15 minutes
- Fielding restrictions apply for the first six overs of each innings
- Each bowler may bowl a maximum of four overs (or one-fifth of the revised quota in case of a shortened game)
- As in normal ODI matches, one short-pitched ball is allowed per over
- Teams are penalised six runs for each over not bowled within the stipulated playing time
- Umpires can penalise batting teams five runs if they believe that a batsman is wasting time
- A batsman is to be ruled 'timed out' if he is not in position to take guard within one minute 30 seconds of the fall of the previous wicket
- The batsman is allowed a free hit off the delivery following a foot-fault no-ball
