Former South Africa captain Dean Elgar will assume the captaincy duties for the final time in his farewell Test match against India starting from 3rd January 2023. Full-time captain Temba Bavuma is out of the second Test after sustaining a hamstring strain while fielding on Day 1 of the first Test in Centurion. (Scorecard | Match Report | Cricket News)

Cricket South Africa informed on the conclusion of the Boxing Day Test on Thursday. Because of the injury, Bavuma didn't take further part in the game after leaving the field on Day 1. Elgar was the stand-in captain in his absence. 

Dean Elgar is an experienced captain who has previously led the national side. During India's last visit to South Africa in 2021-22, Elgar was leading the team. After losing the first match of the Test series and trailing 0-1, Elgar's leadership skills came to the fore as he led his team to a remarkable comeback, winning the series 2-1.

Elgar scored his 14th Test century in the first match and played a 185-run knock in the first innings. Under his leadership, South Africa won the first Test match against India by an innings and 32 runs. He was also named player of the match.

Already one man down South Africa made 408 runs in the first innings and took a lead of 163 runs after restricting India to 245 runs in the first inning. South African bowlers showcased a brilliant display of fast bowling and claimed India's all ten wickets on the third day and bundled them out for 131 runs. South Africa take a lead of 1-0 in the series.

Elgar had already announced before the series that he would retire from international cricket after the second Test match against India starting from 3rd January 2023. Zubayr Hamza has been named Bavuma's replacement in the squad.
