Even as India continues to strengthen its bid for the the 2036 Olympics, Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday (June 22, 2025) said the national capital and the nation overall were fully ready to host the Games. She expressed hope that the global community would grant this honour to India, which as per her would organise the quadrennial sports extravaganza with unwavering commitment.
Gupta was speaking with reporters after flagging off, along with Union sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the Olympic Day Run from JLN Stadium in the city. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha was also in attendance at the event.
The Olympic Day Run in Delhi brought a lot of joy, as thousands of residents participated enthusiastically, Gupta said. "Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is continuously progressing towards better sports infrastructure and facilities for athletes. Delhi and the entire country are fully prepared to host the 2036 Olympic Games," she added.
In January 2025, PM Modi had said that the central government was putting all its might behind the ambitious bid to bag the hosting rights of 2036 Olympics.
The Prime Minister had expressed India's intent to host the 2036 Olympic Games during the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) session in Mumbai in 2023. The IOA has submitted the official letter of intent to the IOC.
Countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia are also in the running for the 2036 Games hosting rights.
