Jofra Archer marked his return to Test cricket with an early wicket but England and India are evenly matched after day two at Lord's.

India finished Friday's play on 145-3, trailing England by 242 runs after bowling the hosts out for 387 thanks to Jasprit Bumrah's starring role.

Joe Root (104) started the day on 99 and wasted no time getting to his 37th Test century, slashing the first ball of the day for a boundary.

However, Bumrah (5-74) made a quick start at the home of cricket, removing Root, Ben Stokes (44) and Chris Woakes (zero) within his first two overs.

Jamie Smith (51) and Brydon Carse (56) steered England to a competitive first-innings score before Archer (1-22) stole the headlines.

The England seamer forced an outside-edge from Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) with just his third ball of his first over.

Stokes (1-16) then bowled Karun Nair (40), with Root making the all-important catch, his 211th in Test matches, while Chris Woakes removed Shubman Gill (16). KL Rahul (53 not out) and Rishabh Pant (19 not out) will start day three at the crease for the tourists.

Data Debrief: Root at it again for England

Root's 37th Test century was also his 11th against India and his eighth at Lord's.

He has now scored three consecutive tons at the venue (143 and 103 against Sri Lanka), becoming the third player to do so after Jack Hobbs (1912-1926) and Michael Vaughan (2004-2005).

Root also now holds the record for the most catches as an outfielder in Test matches. Of the players to have taken at least 75 catches, Root has the sixth best catching efficiency, taking 76.8% of his catches.

Bumrah also wrote his name into the history books by taking a 13th five-wicket haul in away Tests, the most by any Indian bowler, surpassing Kapil Dev's 12 five-fors.
