Canada Open 2023: Lakshya Sen Reaches BWF World Tour Final, PV Sindhu Crashes Out In Semis

On Sunday, Indian ace shuttler Lakshya Sen sealed a place in the final of the Canada Open, a BWF Super 500 event, after beating his Japanese rival Kenta Nishimoto in the semifinals. In what was Sen’s first appearance in a BWF World Tour Final in almost a year, he defeated Nishimoto in straight games in the semifinals of the Canada Open held in Calgary.

Sen, the 19th-ranked player, who got ousted from the top ten of the world ranking, defeated the 11th-ranked Kenta Nishimoto in straight games with a score of 21-17, 21-14.

He took 44 minutes to get the upper hand against his opposition, dominating the head-to-head tally by 2-1.

After finishing third at the Thailand Open, Lakshya’s best result this season, he is eying to clinch the Canada Open title.

The second semifinal winner between Kodai Naraoka and Li Shi Feng will face Lakshya in the final. While the 22-year-old has had some excellent victories against some top players in the Canada Open, the final is an important milestone in his comeback journey. 

Experienced campaigner P.V. Sindhu crashed out of the Canada Open in the women’s singles semifinal after losing to world numero uno Akane Yamaguchi with a score of 21-14, 21-15.

After losing to Yamaguchi in the first round of the Singapore Open, this was her second defeat on the trot against the Japanese shuttler.

The world no.15 hasn’t won anything since his last title at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. She was nursing an injury that ruled her out for six months since the CWG 2022. The veteran finished second and third at the Madrid Spain Masters and Malaysia Masters, respectively.
