Seven tiny tables and three bar chairs don’t amount to much—not even in space-starved south Mumbai. But Suzette, the charming and increasingly popular creperie in Nariman Point, proves that good things often come in small packages.

Suzette specialises in traditional buckwheat crepes from Brittany, that rare creation that seems to work with both adults and children. While there is an array of specials with complex fillings—including the delicious Pomme (goat cheese, gomasio, honey and steamed apple) and Foret (pan-seared mushroom, creamed spinach, emmenthal)—it’s possible to pick and choose fillings as well. Which works well with fussy children. So my own brood of three girls always shares a crepe stuffed with emmenthal and a lovely, smoky chicken bacon; then they order the light, citrusy classic crepe with sugar and lemon and, finally, a scrumptious dessert crepe stuffed with Belgian chocolate.

The more adventurous adults sometimes get misled into ordering overly fancy crepes like the Mediterranee—where the flavours of the olive tapenade, rather chewy grilled chicken and tomatoes, overwhelm the delicate taste and texture of the crepe itself. But they can stumble upon gems like the crepe filled with peach compote and topped with whipped cream.

Suzette also offers salads, desserts, and a new array of croques—flat, hot sandwiches. But people who take the trouble to wait patiently for a table and put up with a mysterious drip from an overhead pipe do so for the marvelous crepes with their exciting range of filling.
