The historic narrow gauge train plying between Kalka and Shimla completes a 100 years on November 9. The fortnight-long festivities will include the centenary train being lugged uphill on the day by an antique steam engine. A five-day-long heritage walk along the tracks, from Kalka to Shimla, has evinced interest from even Himachal governor V.S. Kokje. A commemorative postal stamp, an artists’ camp and a theatre festival at Shimla’s historic Gaiety Theatre are the other highlights. In recent years, besides the old train with wooden slats for seats, the Railways has introduced several tourist-friendly trains on this section. The railcar is one such adaptation, where around 30 passengers can sit in deluxe comfort while admiring the hill scenery.
