Zack Snyder's latest film, Rebel Moon, is set to arrive on Netflix in December 2023, introducing a new science fiction franchise to eager fans. Inspired by Akira Kurosawa's works and iconic sci-fi epics like Dune (2021) and Star Wars, the movie promises an epic-scale narrative. While drawing inspiration from Star Wars, Rebel Moon remains an original story unrelated to George Lucas's universe. The release is reported to feature both a PG-13 version and a more intense R-rated extended cut.

Centered around Kora, a young woman with a cryptic past, Rebel Moon traces her efforts to assemble a band of fighters from nearby planets, united against the oppressive rule of the Mother World empire. The moon of Veldt serves as the stage; once a peaceful settlement, now under the Imperium’s dominion. Regent Balisarus, the film's antagonist and a ruthless and cunning intergalactic warlord, makes Veldt his latest conquest, sparking rebellion from Kora and her fellow rebels.

The Rebel Moon’s cinematic canvas is set to be vast, showcasing otherworldly creatures, duels reminiscent of lightsaber clashes, interstellar conflicts, extraterrestrial lifeforms, and complex mythos. Inspiration drawn from Akira Kurosawa's legacy and the Japanese Jidaigeki film tradition, particularly Seven Samurai (1954), weaves through the narrative—a tale of unity against peril and repression. The echoes of iconic sci-fi epics like Dune and Star Wars also resonate, interwoven with Zack Snyder's mature sensibilities. The most distinct inspiration visible in the trailer was laser-powered swords that resembled the iconic lightsaber from the Star Wars franchise.

Rebel Moon has been in development since 2012, with Snyder attached. The film finally began shooting in April 2022 after a long journey to get to Netflix. This is Snyder's second major film for Netflix, and the collaboration appears to be a good fit for all sides. Snyder's Army of the Dead ( year of release), another picture that seems to have spawned a cinematic universe, was distributed by Netflix in 2021, with a sequel on the way.

Following his run of superhero films in the 2010s, Snyder became best known for the uproar over his departure from Justice League (2015) and the ensuing alterations to the project. An internet campaign pushed to have the filmmaker's original vision restored in Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021), becoming one of the largest fan activism movements ever.
