Eight people including three children died after the trawler carrying them and several others capsized in Munshiganj district after colliding with a sand-laden vessel in a branch of Padma River in Bangladesh.

Louhajung Fire Service Station Officer Qais Ahmed said that the accident occurred around 8.30 pm on Saturday.

According to reports, Ahmed said, "So far, we have recovered the bodies of eight people, and four of them have been sent to the local hospital. Two bodies, including a child, remain on the river bank."

On Sunday morning the Fire Service and Civil Defence resumed the rescue operation for the missing people because at around 2 am in the night, the weather and strong currents had halted the operation.

The dead could not be identified immediately. They include three children, two women and a man.

Reportedly, the Munshiganj Superintendent of Police Aslam Khan said that the passengers from Sirajdikhan were on a daylong picnic on the boat and the accident occurred while they were returning home.

Aslam informed the media that most of the passengers who survived the accident were able to swim to the shores.

Deltaic Bangladesh is crisscrossed by several hundred rivers while hundreds of people die each year in boat and ferry accidents in Bangladesh, largely due to overcrowding and poor safety standards of vessels.
