Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is likely to visit India next week for his first trip as prime minister
The visit comes as Bangladesh continues pressing India for Sheikh Hasina’s extradition
The talks could test whether broader bilateral cooperation can move ahead despite the Hasina dispute
As New Delhi and Dhaka continue to navigate a dispute over Dhaka's request for the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is likely to visit India next week, the Indian Express reported.
The proposed visit would be Rahman's first to India as prime minister and comes as Bangladesh seeks closer engagement with New Delhi following the country's political transition.
Preparations are under way for Rahman's visit, although the exact date and details of the programme were still being worked out.
Hasina Extradition Row
The visit comes against the backdrop of Bangladesh's demand for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since fleeing Bangladesh in 2024.
At the MEA briefing held on Tuesday, India said its position on Hasina's public activities in India "needs no repetition" and that extradition requests were "being examined as part of our established processes."
The issue remains politically sensitive because Hasina's extradition is among the conditions Bangladesh has raised in connection with Rahman's proposed visit.
What The Visit Means
Rahman's visit could provide an opportunity for the two sides to discuss bilateral ties, trade, energy cooperation and security issues, alongside the extradition dispute.
For India, the proposed visit comes as New Delhi seeks to maintain a "positive, constructive and forward-looking" relationship with Bangladesh based on "mutuality of interest and reciprocity", a position reiterated by the MEA.
The timing of the visit will therefore test how far the two governments can separate broader bilateral cooperation from the unresolved question of Hasina's extradition.
