2: Within 10 days of starting the shoot in Mumbai's Film City in February, a fire destroyed the elaborate set of the McNally Cottage. It was rebuilt from scratch at Mehboob Studio.
3: In June, the unit went back to shoot in Simla, at the Woodville Palace and the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. But fans made it impossible to shoot at the Mall, so the entire Simla Mall was recreated in Kamalistan.
4: Bhansali specifically wanted a 'Helen Keller look' for his actors—coats, jackets, tweeds, loose drapes, coarse textures and layered clothing; all in muted shades. Instead of a flamboyant filmi costume designer, he turned to the talented young fashion designer from Calcutta, Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
