The first trailer for Forgotten Island has been released, offering a glimpse into DreamWorks’ latest animated adventure centred on friendship and memory. According to Variety, the film marks a new original project from the studio, set against the backdrop of the Philippines in the 1990s.
The story follows two childhood friends, Jo and Raissa, voiced by H.E.R and Liza Soberano. It has been shown that their bond is tested as they prepare to take different paths after school, with one choosing to stay back while the other plans to move abroad. Their final night together takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious portal transports them to the island of Nakali.
A world of myth and memory
On the island, it has been revealed that the two encounter creatures inspired by Filipino folklore, while also facing an unusual threat. Their memories of the outside world, including their friendship, are slowly erased the longer they remain there. A companion in the form of a weredog named Raww joins them, while a powerful entity known as the Manananggal stands in their way.
The narrative is shaped around their attempt to escape before losing themselves completely, with themes of identity and connection woven through the fantasy setting.
Creative team and cast
The film is being directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, who previously collaborated on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The voice cast also includes Dave Franco, Lea Salonga, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy and Ronny Chieng. Production has been handled by Mark Swift, with Universal Pictures distributing the film.
The project is seen as a distinct addition to DreamWorks’ slate, particularly for its focus on Filipino mythology and storytelling.
