Three Muslim clerics were beaten up by unidentified persons in a moving train in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district, police said on Thursday.

According to NDTV, one of the attackers shouted, "Why do you wear a rumaal (scarf)?"

"The 'maulvis', who boarded a passenger train at Delhi on Wednesday night, were on their way to their village in Baghpat when they had a tiff with some youth who allegedly beat them up," SP Baghpat Jaiprakash Singh told PTI.

The police also told the news agency that the victims and some of their supporters later got down at Amhaida station and lodged their protest against the incident and a case was registered against six unidentified persons at the Baghpat Kotwali police station.

According to reports, it has also been alleged that the three 'maulvis'- Gulzar, Israr and Abrar - were pushed out of the train. However, the police are yet to confirm it.

"We have transferred the case to the railway police officials. They are now investigating the incident," PTI quoted Baghpat Kotwali in charge B Kumar as saying.

In June, 16-year-old Junaid Khan was beaten to death following an argument over seat in a Mathura-bound-train in Delhi. According to reports, a mob of 20 men attacked Junaid and his elder brother on a moving train. The attackers also abused Junaid and his brother and called them "anti-nationals" and "beef-eaters".
