Several prominent ulemas today appealed to Muslimleadership in Jammu and Kashmir to extend "positive" cooperation tothe efforts made by the central government in resolving the Kashmir problem.

In a joint appeal on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad un-Nabi,they said the state Muslim leadership should come forward with conviction tofulfil "their religious, moral and national obligations in raising the flagof humanity and peace."

The ulemas also endorsed the efforts made by centre'sinterlocutor in Kashmir K.C. Pant to resolve the issue by initiating dialogue.

"On the one hand we appeal our respected Kashmirileaders to adopt a positive and constructive attitude, on the other we assure Pantof our full support in his historic efforts to secure the unity and integrity ofour sacred country," they said.

The signatories include chairman Islamic Council of IndiaQari Mohammad Mian Mazhari, Mufti Shamsuddin of Dargah Hazrat Massod Salar Ghaziof Bahraich, Syed Shah Manzoor Ahmed Chisti Sabri of Kaiyar Shareef (UP), MoulanaUsman Ghani, Ameene Shariat Gujarat and Mufti Mohammad Ayub Mazhar of Bihar.

Muslim Body Flays ISI Activities

Meanwhile, in Kolkata, the All India Milad un Nabi Conferencetoday urged all sections of people, particularly the Muslims, to remain vigilantabout subversive activities of Pakistani intelligence agency (ISI) in West Bengal.

''The conference warns the communal organisations notnot to plan anti-national activities in the state which might jeopardise peaceand traditional Hindu-Muslim amity,'' it said in a resolution passed at its 71stopen session here.

The session, which celebrated the birthday of Prophet Mohammedas International Peace and Prophet's Day, assured full cooperation to the unionand state governments for taking drastic measures to crush ISI activities.

In this context, the conference appealed to all''strata of people, specially Muslims, to be alert to ISI activities in thestate''.

Welcoming India's invitation to Pakistan military rulerPervez Musharraf for dialogue, the conference hoped that it would succeed inimproving the relations between the two countries.

The resolution also appealed to prime minister Vajpayeeand state chief minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee to take steps for setting up anUrdu university to be named after Abul Kalam Azad in the southern part of thecity.

It also appealed to the centre and state government forincreasing representation of Muslims in the civil and military services inproportion to their share of population.

Special prayers programmes were organised on theoccasion.
