PM Modi Swearing-in Highlights: Amit Shah Joins Cabinet; Smriti Irani, Piyush Goyal Prakash Javadekar Retained

Narendra Modi was on Thursday sworn in as the prime minister of India for his second term. Alongside him, senior BJP leaders Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari and Nirmala Sitharaman were also administered an oath of office as cabinet ministers.

9:14 pm:  The swearing-in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet ministers were administered the oath of office and secrecy,  has concluded. Fifty-seven leaders were sworn in as ministers and ministers of state for the Union. 

8:59 pm: Debashri Chaudhary sworn in as a minister of state for the union.

8:57 pm: Kailash  Chaudhary takes oath as a minister of state for the union. 

8:56 pm: Pratap Chandra Sarangi, newly elected parliamentarian from Odisha, sworn in as a minister of state.

8:52 pm: Rameshwar Teli takes oath as a minister of state for the union.

8:50 pm: Som Prakash takes oath as minister of state for the union.

8:12 pm: Phaggan Singh Kulaste has taken oath as a minister of state in the new government. Following him is Ashwani Kumar Chaubey who is being administered the oath of office now.

8:10 pm: Hardeep Singh Puri, the BJP candidate who lost from Amritsar, has also been administered an oath of office as a minister of state in the new government.

Santosh Gangwar, Rao Inderjit, Shripad Naik and Jitendra Singh sworn-in as ministers of state with independent charge.

8:02 pm: Kiren Rijiju, who was a minister of state during Modi's first term as PM, has been retained as a minister.

7:49 pm: Dharmendra Pradhan, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Prahlad Joshi take oath as Union Ministers.

7:38 pm: Prakash Javadekar and Piyush Goyal have been retained as cabinet ministers. 

7:34 pm: Smriti Irani, the "giant slayer" as she is now known after defeating Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, takes oath as a cabinet minister. Dr Harshwardhan who was earlier part of the cabinet has also taken an oath as a minister in the Modi-led government. 

7: 23 pm: Arjun Munda, former chief minister of Jharkhand, is being administered an oath of office as a minister in the Modi-led cabinet. 

7:19 pm: Among other leaders who have been administered an oath of office are Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Ram Vilas Paswan and Narendra Singh Tomar.

7:16 pm: PM Modi's mother claps as his son takes oath as the prime minister of the country. 

7:09: BJP President Amit Shah is currently taking oath as a minister in the Narendra Modi cabinet. 

7:06 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been administered an oath of office of the prime minister. Rajnath Singh is currently taking oath as one of the ministers of the Modi cabinet.

6:51 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy has made its way to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.  He has reached the dais, where leaders who will be sworn-in as ministers alongside the prime minister greet him. 

6:49 pm:  Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia have arrived at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. JD (U) chief and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is also at the venue. His party, despite being a part of the NDA, won't have any representation in the Modi cabinet. Senior JD(U) leader Pawan Verma said the BJP's offer was not acceptable to them.

6:43 pm:  Rajyawardhan Singh Rathore, former minister of state for sports, and former foreign affairs minister Sushma Swaraj are seated among the audience. They're not going to be among the cabinet ministers.

6:34 pm: Among Congress leaders, who are attending the ceremony are Ghulam Nabi Azad and Shashi Tharoor. Sushma Swaraj and Suresh Prabhu are yet to be seen at the ceremony. 

6:29 pm: BJP President Amit Shah, who is expected to be a part of the Modi cabinet 2.0, has arrived at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. A TV channel, quoting sources, has reported that former foreign affairs minister Sushma Swaraj may not retain her ministry.

6:23 pm: BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad, LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan and Amethi MP Smriti Irani have also arrived. Amit Shah is sitting next to Nitin Gadkari.

6:01 pm: Sources say Rajnath Singh is expected to retain Home  Ministry. Among the parliamentarians who didn't receive a call from Amit Shah were Maneka Gandhi and Anant Kumar Hegde.  

5:51 pm: People have started gathering outside the Rashtrapati Bhavan ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony. Industrialist Ratan Tata has also arrived to attend the oath-taking ceremony.  

5:43 pm: The families of West Bengal BJP workers, who were killed in political violence during the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, have reached the Rashtrapati Bhavan to ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony.

3:35 pm: Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli arrives in Delhi.

3:24 pm: President of Kyrgyzstan, Sooronbay Jeenbekov arrives in Delhi. He will attend PM Narendra Modi's oath ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan later today.

1:53 pm: BJP leaders Nitin Gadkari, DV Sadananda Gowda, Dharmendra Pradhan, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Giriraj Singh, Babul Supriyo and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal will be sworn-in as ministers in the second government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this evening, news agency ANI reported.

Gadkari held the portfolio of Road Transport and Highways in Modi's first government and retained his Nagpur Lok Sabha seat in the recently concluded elections.

12:55 pm: BJP leaders Piyush Goyal and Bhupender Yadav visit party president Amit Shah's residence in Delhi.

12:12 pm: Ministers selected for the oath of office will meet PM Modi at 4.30 pm today at his residence, say sources.

12: 02 pm: President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, arrives in Delhi to attend PM Narendra Modi's oath ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan later today.

11:40 am: President of Myanmar, U Win Myint, arrives in Delhi. 

10:38 am: Thailand's Special Envoy Grisada Boonrac arrives in Delhi to take part in PM Narendra Modi's oath ceremony today. Thailand's Ambassador to India, Chutintorn Gongsakdi says, "We have come to celebrate India's vibrant and resilient democracy."

7:55 am: Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhle receives Prime Minister of Bhutan, Lotay Tshering on his arrival in Delhi. He will attend Narendra Modi's oath ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan later today.
