The Edgbaston pitch proved to be a batter’s dream, and India’s skipper Shubman Gill along with Ravindra Jadeja made sure to capitalise on the ideal conditions. The duo stitched together a superb sixth-wicket partnership that not only steadied India after early setbacks but also left England’s bowlers searching for answers.
By the time the stand was broken, India had seized control of the second Test.
After losing a couple of key wickets on Day 1, India found themselves under pressure. England had edged ahead when Jadeja walked to the crease, but the all-rounder, in tandem with Gill, turned the tide. The pair combined grit and flair to put together 203 runs for the sixth wicket — the second-highest sixth-wicket partnership for India against England at Edgbaston.
The record at this venue still belongs to Jadeja and Rishabh Pant, who added 222 runs during the one-off Test in 2022.
That 2022 partnership had rescued India from a similar tough position, with both Pant and Jadeja scoring centuries to lift the team. Although those efforts ended in heartbreak as England successfully chased their highest-ever Test target, the impact of their stand was immense.
Similarly, this time around, Gill and Jadeja’s partnership has put India firmly in charge at the end of Day 2.
Interestingly, the 203-run stand is also the third-highest sixth-wicket partnership for India against England across all Tests. The highest remains Pant and Jadeja’s 222 at Edgbaston (2022), followed by Pant and KL Rahul’s 204-run stand at The Oval in 2018. Mohammad Azharuddin and Kiran More’s 69-run unbeaten partnership during the 1986 tour ranks next.
