With Odisha witnessing a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases, the state government has issued directives to government-run medical colleges and chief district medical officers to enhance surveillance, testing, and overall preparedness. In a communication addressed to all medical institutions, Public Health Director Niranjan Mishra emphasized the need for immediate and proactive measures in light of the rising cases across India, as reported by PTI.

The government outlined specific measures, urging an increase in surveillance for influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI). Testing facilities are to be expanded to all health institutions. For individuals testing positive, strict adherence to home isolation protocols is mandated. Additionally, necessary treatment support, dedicated beds, and oxygen-supported beds are to be ensured in accordance with COVID management protocols.

Authorities were instructed to closely follow the COVID management strategy and collaborate with district administrations to boost community awareness through Information Education Communication (IEC) and Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) initiatives. The focus is on encouraging symptomatic, elderly, and vulnerable populations to adhere to COVID-19 appropriate behavior.

To tackle the situation effectively, the government stressed the importance of maintaining an adequate supply of test kits, reagents, drugs, and consumables. Timely data entry and reporting, along with training and capacity building of healthcare providers and laboratory personnel, are emphasized. A contingency plan is to be kept ready to address any unforeseen developments.
