Equestrian Hurdles
  • 1974: The Tamil Nadu government brings in the Horse-Racers Abolition of Wagering Act and extends the Madras City Police Act to the MRC, rendering racing illegal.
  • 1975: The MRC challenges the act in the Madras High Court.
  • September 1975: A two-judge bench of the Madras High Court dismisses the MRC writ. The MRC appeals to the Supreme Court.
  • November 1975: The Supreme Court stays the act. Racing continues.
  • January 1986: The state government takes over the MRC following allegations of mismanagement. The MRC challenges the takeover.
  • April 1986: The Supreme Court stays the takeover and appoints an interim committee to run the affairs of the club.
  • May 1986: The MRC withdraws the earlier 'abolition' petition. In view of the withdrawal, the MGR government stops racing.
  • July 1986: The MRC moves the apex court to restore the old abolition petition. The Supreme Court permits only inter-venue betting.
  • 1988: The Supreme Court permits actual racing.
  • 1994: The issue is argued in court.
  •  January 12, 1996: The Supreme Court rules in favour of the MRC.
