Deepfake Row: Centre Soon To Bring Law To Tackle The New Threat To Democracy, Says IT Minister

During a press conference on Thursday, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clearly stated that the creators of deepfake videos and platforms hosting them would be penalised.

Amid the spiralling row over the increasing concern around deepfakes, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said that the Centre will soon bring in a new law or make amendments to existing laws. During the press conference, the minister also clearly stated that the creators of deepfake videos and platforms hosting them would be penalised.

"Deepfakes have emerged as a new threat to democracy. These (can) weaken trust in society and its institutions," the IT Minister said after his meeting with various stakeholders, including social media platforms, Nasscom and other professors from the field of artificial intelligence.

He further added, "As I have stated earlier, digital world doesn't have the physical boundaries that we see in the physical world, so anything which is created anywhere, but if it is used in India, within our geography, it will be regulated."
