July 18, 1949: Karachi Agreement signed, establishing a UN-supervised Ceasefire Line

1963: Six rounds of secret talks held with Pakistan on "Kashmir and other related issues," but end in deadlock.

January 1966:Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and Pakistani President Ayub Khan sign the Taskent Agreement.

July 2, 1972: Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistan President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto sign the Simla Accord, and define a new line of control very similar to the 1949 Ceasefire Line.

February 1978: Foreign minister Atal Behari Vajpayee visits Pakistan. Signs agreements on trade, cultural exchanges, and communications.

1980: Indira Gandhi sends a special emissary to Islamabad and proposes talks on reduction of force levels to Gen Zia-ul-Haq.

June 1981: External affairs minister P.V. Narasimha Rao goes to Pakistan.

November 1 1982: Indira Gandhi meets Zia in New Delhi, and both sides agree to proceed with talks leading to the establishment of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), and set up the Indo-Pakistan Joint Commission.

January-February 1987: The tensions created by military exercises and the nuclear issue were defused following talks at the foreign secretary level in New Delhi (January 31-February 4) and Islamabad (February 27-March 2), during which the two sides agreed to a phased troop withdrawal to peacetime positions.

December 1988: Benazir Bhutto meets Rajiv Gandhi at the SAARC summit in Islamabad. They sign three bilateral agreements, including one proscribing attacks on each other’s nuclear facilities.

1990: Foreign secretary-level discussions over confidence-building measures, as a response to the Kashmir confrontation. Cancelled in 1992.

1997: Prime ministers I.K. Gujral and Nawaz Sharif meet twice (in Male, May 12, and New York in September). Foreign secretaries meet three times and identify eight "outstanding issues" around which continuing talks would focus.

February 28, 1999: Vajpayee takes the much-hyped bus to Lahore, meets Nawaz Sharif
