The government has removed the SPG security cover of Congress' Gandhi family and downgraded it to 'Z+' security cover of CRPF, officials in the Ministry of Home Affairs said on Friday
The Congress leaders whose SPG security cover was stripped include former party chief Rahul Gandhi, interim party President Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The Union government took the decision to withdraw the Gandhi family's Special Protection Group (SPG) cover after a security assessment, a senior official said.
Earlier this year, the MHA had stripped former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of his SPG security cover and lowered it to 'Z+' security cover.
However, former Prime Minister and BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee was protected by an SPG cover until his death in 2018.
