BJP said the invitation for talks to Pakistan military ruler gen Pervez Musharraf in delhi was in keeping with the government's policy but felt that Islamabad must cease cross-border terrorism before any bilateral talks.

"The decision to invite Musharraf for talks in delhi was in line with the government's policy to seek peaceful solution to bilateral problems with all our neighbours. Since kargil war, we have taken the position that Pakistan must cease cross-border terrorism before we hold any bilateral talks," party General secretary Narendra Modi told reporters here.

He said the party hoped Pakistan would approach the talks in a positive manner and that it would be held in a peaceful atmosphere and on the basis of the Shimla agreement and the Lahore declaration.

Modi said it appears the government has got some indications that Pakistan was now inclined to pursue the path of peace.

Stating the party fully supported the government decison to call off the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir, he said despite several sincere attempts being made to involve disparate groups in meaningful discussions there had been no "concrete results."

He said he was certain that the "trishul formula" adopted by the government in tackling the problem of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir "would yield good results".

Elaborating on it, Modi said the formula "incorporated talks with Musharraf, talks with groups in the valley through K.C. Pant and calling off the ceasefire".
