The National Fisherfolk Forum has condemned the observation by Supreme Court Judge J Chandrachud who had compared a chaotic scene in the courtroom to a 'fish market'.
The fisher community has taken offense to the analogy made by Justice Chandrachud who was hearing a PIL over the death of Justice Loya, on February 5. J. Chandrachud had asked not to 'reduce the dialogue in this court to a level of fish market' after a heated exchange between senior lawyers Dushyant Dave and Pallav Shishodia took place.
The two lawyers had exchanged harsh words and took open digs at one another.
The National Fisherfolk Forum, a national confederation of state-level fisher federations, have issued a press statement condemning the remarks and demanded J. Chandrachud to take back the comment 'in the very same forum it was uttered'.

"The utterance of the Honourable justice is tantamount to disrespecting the total fishers communities..The hearts of the fisher community are pained as he has mentioned their activity in a case which has nothing in common, " read the Press statement.
"We would also like to know why the activities of a fish market should be mentioned in such bad colour," it further said.
The 'Fish Market' Expression
The expression 'like a fish market' is a predominantly an Indian coinage, most commonly used by teachers reprimanding students: 'This classroom is like a fish market'.
In a similar usage, a Supreme Court bench, recently, chided the government for filing an 845-page affidavit containing incomplete information about solid waste management across the country and said the apex court is not a "garbage collector".

"Don't do this. Whatever junk you have, you dump it before us. We are not garbage collectors. Be absolutely clear about this," the bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta had said.
